If I had a penny for every exercise machine I’ve owned in my life that hasn’t worked I’d be able to buy a car. Then at least I could drive myself to gym. The Orbitrek has been one of those fads that take the neighborhood by storm and before you know it every housewife has one. Well I have one too, and it works for me.

If there is one thing I hate about the Orbitrek it’s the silly infomercial. The one with the blonde woman who gyms three times a day claiming that the Orbitrek made her lose weight. With her figure, I doubt she’s ever known a day of being fat in her life. But a friend told me she had heard only good things about it, so, in a moment of exasperation I bought one.

The Orbitrek is a funny looking machine. But I urge you all to look past the humor of cycling standing up. The first time I tried my Orbitrek I was truly surprised. It really does give you a work out. My arms burnt, my legs burnt and my stomach was feeling rather tighter than usual. This is because when you stand on an Orbitrek to use it, you pedal with your feet while holding the handle bars in front. Your feet follow a circular cycle and your arms move forwards and backwards. Orbitrek claims, “The elliptical rotation of the pedals and the motion of vertical stride bars are engineered to complement the natural movements of the human body.” I’m not sure about that, it was rather uncomfortable and I can’t recall the last time I walk cycled anywhere, but it was fun and that was enough.

But I have used it ever since, and you do get used to the awkwardness after a while. Every morning I hop on and cycle for a half an hour at a medium pace. Sometimes if I’m feeling brave I’ll run on it for thirty seconds to get my heart pumping. And I believe I have become quite fit because of it. Yes I stopped eating a lot and took supplements, but nothing beats that energy rush from my Orbitrek. I doubt losing weight can give you that much energy.

The trick is to use it every day. I resigned myself to the fact that it was part of my life and I would never skip a day, just like brushing my teeth. I think of all the exercise equipment out there the Orbitrek delivers on at least some of its promises!
