Bread – what dieticians don’t tell you!

Bread. Most of us have some form of bread everyday. In today’s fast paced world, quick and satisfying sells and that means we eat it all the time. Delicious and able to change consistently depending on what filling you feel like, bread is a dieter’s nightmare. Some diets tell you to eat loads of bread, some forbid you to eat any, but what is the right option? Well it’s simple, and here’s why. Different bread holds different calorie content. When a diet tells you not to eat bread you starve. If a diet tells you, you can have three slices a day, do you eat whatever is in your bread bin? The trick is to find low calorie bread that you can enjoy.

Lets have a look at the calorie count on one slice of your favorite bread:

White has 67 calories per slice. Two slices will cost you 134 calories before your filling.
Low calorie white has 48 calories per slice. Two of those mean 96 calories. Not bad.
Whole wheat has 69 calories per slice. 138 calories for two.
Low calorie whole wheat bread has 46 calories a slice. 92 calories for two.
Rye bread has 83 calories per slice. 166 for two.
White Pita bread has 77 calories per small pita.
White rolls have 120 calories per roll.
Whole wheat rolls have 74 calories per roll.

As you can see it’s not as simple as you previously thought. One whole wheat roll nearly halves the amount of calories that two slices of whole wheat bread has.

Two white rolls substituted for two slices of bread will set you back 240 calories, plain!

Normal white bread has less calories that normal whole wheat bread, so why deny yourself the white?

And rye bread? I’ll bet none of you ladies out there realized that having two slices of ‘healthier’ rye was going to be so calorie packed.

You should always check the labels of the bread you buy. If you want to eat bread on your diet make sure the bread you are using isn’t adding to the problem. Remember the goal of losing weight is to burn more than you consume!
